Lucas Valley
The city of San Rafael is home to more than 1550 Eichler homes built between 1955-1966. This project is one of the 375 of the Eichler tract built between 1957-8. JBLA stripped the front of the property of the typical overgrown/over-pruned fire-hazard Juniperus. Each side of the new entry walk is treated as if a minimalist painting, like a Rothko color field. Plants are drought tolerant and low maintenance, the palette is kept to blue/grey greens, and contrasting textures are given the stage. The paths and driveway are designed as if one, giving the pedestrian a greater sense of place than cars. The site was graded to create simple planes. The design is an exercise in restraint. With an efficiency of means and a restrictive budget, JBLA created an environmentally sound product for the developers who were flipping the property. This project was featured in the San Francisco Chronicle.
